This UNESCO World Heritage site is famed for its five lotus-shaped towers, over 600 meters of intricate bas-reliefs, and elaborate galleries depicting Hindu mythology and Khmer history. The sheer scale and architectural sophistication are a testament to the Khmer Empire’s genius.
  • Bayon Temple: Located in the center of ancient Angkor Thom, Bayon is instantly recognizable for its 216 giant stone faces smiling serenely in all directions. The temple is richly decorated with bas-reliefs illustrating daily life, historical battles, and ceremonial processions, offering visitors a vivid glimpse into the culture of 12th–13th century Cambodia.
  • Ta Prohm: Perhaps the most atmospheric ruin, Ta Prohm has been left largely in the condition it was discovered, with massive silk-cotton trees and strangler figs growing among the ancient walls. The interplay of jungle and temple has created an iconic, photogenic scene made famous by the movie Tomb Raider.
  • 12:30 – Lunch break (at own expense)
  • 14:00–17:00 – Explore Elephant Terrace, Leper King Terrace, South Gate
  • Elephant Terrace
Stretching over 300 meters, the Elephant Terrace was a grand viewing platform for Angkor’s kings to watch parades and public ceremonies. Its long sandstone walls are adorned with detailed carvings of elephants, garudas, and mythical creatures emerging from the stone. The terrace once connected to the royal palace and was used for important gatherings. Today, visitors can imagine the grandeur of the Khmer court assembled here. The bas-reliefs remain a testament to the artisans’ skill and creativity.
  • Leper King Terrace
Adjacent to the Elephant Terrace, the Leper King Terrace gets its name from a statue thought to represent a legendary leper king. The monument features hidden inner walls carved with intricate figures of deities and nagas (serpent spirits). Scholars believe it may have served as a royal cremation platform or ceremonial terrace. Its multi-layered carvings are some of the most beautiful in Angkor. Walking along the narrow corridors feels like uncovering a secret gallery of Khmer mythology.
  • South Gate of Angkor Thom
The South Gate is the grandest of Angkor Thom’s five monumental entrances. A causeway lined with 54 stone gods on one side and 54 demons on the other shows the myth of the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Above the gate tower rise four giant faces watching over the approach. Crossing the bridge feels like entering a sacred realm frozen in time. This dramatic gateway offers one of Angkor’s most iconic photo opportunities.
